“Asterix and Griffin”, thirty-ninth adventure of Gaulois, the fifth signed Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad, contains everything you need of action, humor and winnings. But no potion. How does that, no potion?

In poor popularity “in the Rome from below”, Caesar sends a legion in Central Asia in order to capture a griffin, mythological creature Mid-Lion Mid-Lion, which he can then exhibit at the Games of the circus. Guided by the TerInocus geographer, the expedition will quickly cross the path of Asterix and Obelix, who came to escort the Panoramix Druid, to whom his counterpart Sarmate Cékankondine claimed aid during a premonitory dream. The griffin is indeed the totem of this nomadic people living on horseback and under the yurt. So much for the decor and context of the thirty-ninth episode of the adventures of Asterix, the fifth under the pen of Screenwriter Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad, to whom the series has been entrusted ten years ago for the purpose to “tell the same” of the Creators of the Saga, Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny.
Needless to enter the details of the events waiting for the two heroes. All that makes the architecture and salt of an Asterixian adventure – Bagarres, pirates, Latin quotes, caricatures (formidable Michel Houellebecq in geographer retrol), word games (great “do not take the Helvetia for dull people “) – has been incorporated into a narrative where the action and allusions take precedence at the current time. Jean-Yves Ferri distills some messages about the misinformation, the omnipresence of the internet, the sanitary crisis or the inversion of the relations of gender domination through the example of amazons wearing the war while their husbands have been assigned to housework.

In passing, the screenwriter has allowed some narrative daring, including an introductory ellipse that sees Asterix and Obelix start their adventure in the middle of Frimas and not in the village – village totally absent from the story, except for the last and traditional box , called the banquet. Point of magic potion also in the goster of Asterix, and for good reason: it froze, returning the hero to his condition as man among men. Some homeric lead paids refer to Zizania (1970), masterpiece of the great era, while the quest for mythical animal in the middle of the snowy decorations is reminiscent of … Tintin in Tibet (1960) , from Hergé.
We do not close the album without admiring the work of Didier Conrad, more at ease than ever with the representation of horses and counter-dives to 40 degrees, as the Morris liked in Lucky Luke.
