After the start of the military coup in Sudan, the head of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fatti al-Burkhan declared a state of emergency throughout the country. This is reported by Arab News.
In addition, Burkhan announced the dissolution of the sovereign council and the temporary government. Both authorities acted in parallel from the last state version, which occurred in Sudan in 2019. According to the general, these structures constantly fought with each other and did not contribute to the end of the transition period, which threatened the country’s security.
As a result, the army under the leadership of Burkhan took all the completeness of the authorities in his hands. The general announced that the military will transfer the leadership of the Civilian government after the elections to be held in 2023. However, according to Arab News, a number of members of the international community expressed anxiety about the actions of the military.
The League of Arab States called on General Burkhan to stop the destabilization in Sudan. Chairman of the Commission of the African Union Mousse Faki Mahamat said that civil leaders of the country should be released. In the UK and the United States expressed concern about the arrest of transitional government members.
On October 25, the military from the Sovereign Council were arrested by Prime Minister Sudan Abdalla Humduka. In addition to him, four ministers were detained – communications, information, finance and industry, as well as the Governor Hartuma Ayman Nimir and the representative of the Sovereign Council Muhammed Al-Fiki.
After the arrest of Civil leaders of Sudan in the capital of the country, the city of Khartum began mass protests against the coup. Tens of thousands of local residents came to the streets. In response to this, the military opened fire on the participants of the demonstration, as a result of which 12 people were injured.
