The head of the “DOS COSTAS” Facebook page died on Sunday, October 31 at the hospital, two days after being seriously wounded by bullets, announced the authorities. “I have to present my condolences to the Journalist’s family Alfredo Cardoso Echeverria, founder of the DOS Costas Facebook page [and also Photoreporter], for this regrettable loss,” said Social Networks Evelyn Salgado, the Governor of the Governor State of Guerrero.
According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Mr. Cardoso, whose family had received threats, had been abducted Thursday by encased individuals who had burst to his home. It had been found the next day, reaching five bullets, on board his vehicle, reported local media. Emergency transported to the hospital, the journalist succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
A hundred journalists murdered in twenty years
At least seven journalists were murdered in 2021 in Mexico. However, it has not always been established that death was linked to their work. Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries for those who work in the media, with more than a hundred journalists assassinated since 2000, according to the figures of the Human Rights Commission.
Eight journalists were killed in 2020, according to RSF. More than 90% of journalist homicides remain unpunished, denounce freedom of expression organizations.
