Nun spent four years in captivity of radicals in Mali

Colombian nun-Franciscanka Gloria Cecilia Narzaes spent more than four years in captivity of the militants of the radical group “Front of the Liberation of Masina”, associated with the terrorist network “Al-Qaida” (prohibited in Russia). About her release on Saturday, October 9, the Office of the President of the African country said in Twitter -Akket.

According to the Office, Narvayes was abducted on February 7, 2017, not far from the border of Mali from Burkina Faso. In the summer of 2018, it appeared on video frames published by the terrorist organization “Support Group of Islam and Muslims.” Together with her, another hostage was noticed on the video, human rights activist Sophie Petronen from France, abducted by extremists in Mali at the end of 2016, and which French authorities also rescued earlier from captivity.

In the presidential office, they did not specify which grouping held Narvas. Information about buyback for her liberation was not received.

Situation in Mali is unstable since 2012. Then the rebels-taugays and several groupings of Islamists captured the north of the country, creating a self-proclaimed independent state of Azavad. In 2013, France introduced the troops in Mali, returning the territory under the control of the central authorities of the African Republic. Since then, the Islamists use ethnic confrontation for recruitment of militants.
