The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Belarus, in which the European Union (EU) encouraged the fifth package of sanctions against the republic against the background of the aggravation of the migration crisis at the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The document contains proposals on the inclusion in the package of economic sanctions of the metallurgical, woodworking and chemical sectors. Also in the European Parliament noted that new restrictions should touch all state banks and key industrial enterprises, including Belaruscalia and Beltelecom.
In addition, in resolution, the European Parliament calls on to apply to the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, the principle of universal jurisdiction in connection with the mass crimes committed against citizens of the country. According to the norms of international law, the state has the right to initiate criminal cases against some persons, regardless of their citizenship and the place of crime.
In conclusion, the European Parliament also condemned the support of Lukashenko by the Russian leader Vladimir Putin and called on to introduce additional restrictive measures against Russia because of this.
At the end of June, the European Union introduced the fourth package of economic sanctions against Belarus. Under them were 166 physical and 15 legal entities. Brussels restricted the access of Minsk to its financial markets, introduced restrictions on trade in petroleum products and potash fertilizers, as well as tobacco products. In addition, the transfer of goods and technologies of military and dual-use, as well as insurance services for the authorities of the republic was prohibited.
