Presidential 2022: right is bogged down in a “war of procedure”

While the participation of Xavier Bertrand at the Congress of December 4 is still anything but acquired, the Party the Republicans struggles to get out of the controversy on the modalities of designation of his candidate.

To think about it, smiles a part of the party the Republicans (LR), the right right now looks like the e company. In the defeat of François Fillon’s defeat by 2017 presidential ballot, LR does not seem capable for the moment to choose a candidate for 2022, and, instead of moving forward, seems to come back to deadlock. Some no longer hesitating to qualify the situation of “gag”. Yet a party that does not lack serious candidates for the Supreme Judiciary: Xavier Bertrand, the President of the Hauts-de-France, Valérie Pécresse, the boss of the Ile-de-France region, the ex-European Commissioner and negotiator From Brexit, Michel Barnier, the Mayor of the Garenne-Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine), Philippe Juvin, and the member for Alpes-Maritimes Eric Ciotti. However, impossible for LR to designate his champion, entangled that he has been for months in procedural issues that do not end up.

Some have believed however for a short moment that things were settled. After all, a congress organized on 25 September has decided the issue of open primary to which Xavier Bertrand, the favorite, did not want to participate. The activists either, did not want it and preferred a vote where they alone would have the high hand on the choice of the candidate on December 4th. This procedure, they thought, would have the merit of satisfying all the contenders, Xavier Bertrand himself having made known that such a system could have his favors. At LR, everyone is convinced: only an all-accepted system will allow a rally behind the designated champion and avoid a dual candidacy, absolute terror of executives for months.

Rest that today, Mr. Bertrand’s participation in Congress is anything but acquired. At least, not necessarily alongside the other candidates. Among his supports, we never hidden: if Xavier Bertrand goes to the congress, he must be the only name submitted. The other candidates would then have in this scenario only to give up and rally to him. As of September 29, on Franceinfo, the former Minister of Labor “called to the rally” and warned against “the confrontation”, stating that the date of December 4 was too distant to “agree”.

At the same time on France Inter, Valérie Pécresse made it clear that she did not hear this ear. “The debate on the modalities of selection of the right candidate is closed,” she said. In his entourage, we insist: The former Minister of Higher Education “traces his way” and has no intention to give up his candidacy. After unveiling its proposals on immigration, Tuesday, October 5, it should formalize its participation in the Congress on Wednesday, presenting the 250 sponsorships necessary at the LR headquarters. All, just a few hours before a political office supposed to give the composition of the commission of organization of the famous Congress, which should be chaired by the Senator of the Philippe Low Channel. The idea, explains a loved one, is “to pierce the wall of the sound by making serious proposals on the bottom”.
