Millions of Android smartphones signed up for paid services

More than ten million users have become victims of a new virus for Android. This is reported by the Bleeping Computer edition.

Malicious software discovered Zimperium specialists. The report states that the new Trojan was most active from November 2020 to April 2021. The virus was distributed using 200 Android applications. At the moment, they are all removed from the Google store, but remained accessible in other repositories. Troyan called Grifthorse drawing up paid subscriptions to various services without the knowledge of smartphone users.

According to researchers, cybercriminals could have steal millions of regular payments from victims around the world. After installing the malware, the program received access to the victim number and used it for the design of various subscriptions. For example, Grifthorse could sign the victim on paid SMS services, the cost of which was about 30 euros per month. Users of the first wave that the virus attacked, lost an average of 200 euros or about 17 thousand rubles.

To hit as many victims as possible, Troyan signed a user to services in various categories. According to experts, during its existence, the virus attacked more than ten million devices around the world, and its creators earned hundreds of millions of euros.
