President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko agreed to hold a referendum on the abolition of the death penalty. He stated this on an extended meeting of the Constitutional Commission, transfers BelTA.
Sergei Dubkov Commission Member said that the amendments to the Constitution “strengthen the traditional values of the Belarusian society”, which are “based on Christian values”. However, one of the fundamental Christian values is the right to life – “stands aside”, because the country has a death penalty.
Lukashenko replied that Christians live in the West, but recently most Swiss on the referendum voted for same-sex marriages. “How does it relate to christian values?” – he wondered.
According to Lukashenko, he was often reproached in the fact that Belarus is the only country in Europe, where there is a death penalty. At the same time, Belarusians voted for it on a referendum. “I did not go against the opinion of the people. Although if I signed a decree on suspending the death penalty, I think my rating would not fall,” the politician said.
in his opinion, most Belarusians and now stand for the preservation of the death penalty, but this issue can be postponed for the future. “If already happened, consider it separately on the referendum. And people say about it,” Lukashenko concluded.
Earlier, the President of Belarus announced the completion of the preparation of the new Constitution project.
