The question of the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus will not be considered when amendments to the Constitution, however, may be submitted to a separate referendum. This was stated by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court (CS) of the Republic of Peter Miklashevichev, BelTA reports.
According to him, members of the Constitutional Commission, which consider the amendments to the Basic Law, did not develop a single opinion about the use of execution, and therefore it is to solve this issue to have residents of the republic. The head of the COP noted that the timing of the voting on this account is not yet scheduled.
“He [The question of the abolition of execution] was already considered on the referendum in 1996. And for the special referendum, the relevant work is required, sociological research, explanatory work and verification of the Company’s readiness for the adoption of such a responsible decision,” Miclashevich explained.
Constitutional Commission of Belarus began work in March 2021. In August, she sent the final proposals for amendments to the Constitution for consideration by President Alexander Lukashenko. It is assumed that they will ensure the redistribution of authority in the republic. The referendum on this account can take place at the beginning of 2022.
