Effect of migraine on sleep

Researchers from the UK conducted a study and noticed that adults and children spend in the phase of fast sleep less than their healthy peers. It turned out that migraines affect the total sleep time. By our conclusions, scientists shared in the article published in the journal Neurology.

Specialists from the Royal College of London analyzed the data of 32 studies in which the state of health has been studied more than ten thousand people. During them, participants were offered to fill out the so-called Pittsburgh Questionnaire to determine the quality of sleep (PSQI). People asked to answer questions about how they usually sleep – how much time is required to fall asleep, how many hours do sleep lasts and whether sleeping pills are used. A greater score in PSQI matches the worse sleep quality. In some studies, polysnography was also carried out – during sleep, the level of oxygen in the blood was detected in people, a electroencephalogram, an electrocardiogram and an electroculogram were made.

It turned out that those adult people who have a migraine, a score in the questionnaire was on average higher than those of people without them. People with chronic migraines the difference was even more. Both adults and children have time spent in a fast sleep – phase with a high brain, when dreams are especially bright – it was less. In addition to the short time, children with migraines wanted more often during it and fastened quickly. The last fact, according to researchers, can influence insomnia. At the same time, researchers note that their meta-analysis does not prove the causal relationship of the quality of sleep and the presence of migraine.
