Physical activity turned out to be harmful to people with obesity

The international team of researchers discovered that exercise reduce the number of burning calories in people with obesity during rest. The article of scientists has been published in the journal Current Biology.

Researchers used information about the energy consumption of 1754 people based on the Double Labeled Water Labeled Water database. It turned out that people with the highest body mass index are only 51 percent calories burned during physical activity, transfers in calories that burned per day. For people with a normal body mass index, this figure was 72 percent.

Scientists decided to find out which compensatory mechanisms are responsible for such an effect. So, it turned out that the role of two factors – age (the elderly people tend to compensate for the exercises with food and rest) and actually obesity – in such people an increase in activity reduces the metabolism at full rest. As a result, each spent during the exercises of calorie turns into the accumulation of additional pollodium during rest.

According to scientists, the results of their research should be used to revise physical activity standards. Currently, the weight loss is recommended to burn 500-600 kokalories per day.
