Researchers from the United States allocated factors that allow us to assess the risk of a quick suicide by American soldiers. Work scientists have been published in American Journal of Psychiatry.
Specialists evaluated to raw suicide signs within a month after the detection of the US Army soldiers suicidal ideas – thoughts with the conscious intention or planning to deprive himself. In total, scientists analyzed the data on 11 thousand military personnel of the rank in 2006-2009 with suicidal ideas that did not make suicide attempts.
Of them, 52 percent did not serve two years, and 57.7 percent were not deployed. About 80 percent were recorded on an outpatient reception during the previous two months. The most frequent diagnoses were depression, a disorder associated with the use of tobacco and an adaptation disorder. Attempts to commit suicide as a result, 7.4 percent of the total, 3.5 percent tried to do this within 30 days after the detection of suicidal idea – and the risk was the greatest on the very first day.
In this case, neither the presence of depression nor the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder was associated with an increased risk of suicide, researchers note. The greatest risk was observed in women, military doctors, people with disturbing disorders, as well as soldiers who, at the same time with suicidal thoughts, have revealed sleep disorder. Below the risk of committing suicide was in African American soldiers.
