Soviet floating tanks will receive a new life

Soviet floating PT-76 tanks will receive a new life in Vietnam. Snapshots of the process of capital repairs of machines that were obtained from the Soviet Union during the War of Vietnam, publish Vietnam Navy.

Repair of Soviet cars are carried out at the X70 plant relating to the Sea Engineering Department. The authors of the material note that the PT-76 shown in the pictures is no longer the first overhaul. This is due to age of cars, the production of which stopped in 1967.

Some tanks fall on the plant with the resource by the aggregates and missing parts. Each machine is fully disassembled for the subsequent inspection and replacement or restoration of the aggregates. The pictures are visible four cars, the restoration of which is close to completion.

Judging by the pictures, the X70 does not conduct an additional modernization of PT-76. For example, in Russia in 2013, a modernized floating tank was demonstrated with the AU-220M combat module, which received modern optical instruments. In turn, Indonesia upgraded the Soviet Tank Park by replacing the engine and the gun.

Floating Tank PT-76 was adopted in 1951. Until 1967, more than three thousand cars were released. Part of the tanks was transferred to the countries friendly to the countries, which led to the participation of the tank in several conflicts. Floating machines used India during the two Indo-Pakistani wars. Also PT-76 involved Egypt during the six-day war and the war of the Judgment Day.

During the war in Vietnam, PT-76 tanks were used in most tank battles. Small mass and opportunity to overcome water obstacles ensured the advantage where heavy machines were stuck.

Previously, representatives of Rostech declared plans to create a wheeled tank. The car will form a self-propelled gun “Sprut-SDM1”, which will be equipped with a new combat module and wheeled chassis.
