The researchers from the United States found out that many of the dogs purchased in pet stores are carriers extremely resistant to antibiotics of the Campylobacter Jejuni bacterium strains. The article of scientists is published in Jama Network Open.
Specialists of the Centers for the Control and Prevention of Diseases of the United States studied 168 cases of Campylobacteriosis – the most common causes in the country of diarrhea, which occurred in people who visited pet stores in 2011 and from 2016 to 2020. 97 percent of patients stated that they had contact with the dog before the appearance of symptoms of the disease, 88 percent reported that they had contact with puppies from pet stores.
88 percent of Campylobacteriosis cases were caused by extremely antibiotic-resistant strains of C. jejuni, researchers mark. At the same time, there was no relationship with some specific breeders or sellers. It is also unclear whether bacteria are common in American shelters.
