The conflict between the central government and Tigray Ethiopia began in November 2020. The reason for the war, which killed more than 10 thousand people, were the contradictions between the federal and provincial authorities regarding the separation of powers and recognition of local elections.
In addition, Tigray forces have moved into the territory of the neighboring states of Amhara and Afar. The rebels were able to cut the number of transport routes and take control of several key towns in two states adjacent to Tigray. However, by the autumn of 2021 the government troops, backed by militia Amhara and Afar special forces launched a counteroffensive and regained control over most of the city.
