Nattered ways to solve “Russian question” in Baltic States

The problem of Russians in the Baltic will be resolved naturally. With his opinion on the prospects for the Russian-speaking community in the countries of the region with Ribbon.ru, a resident of Riga Alexey was shared in the framework of a special project dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

He believes that with the change of generations, the whole Russian-speaking population of the region either leaves or is assimilated. For example, Alexey brought his family, stressing that his grandchildren would hardly speak Russian.

“I would like to believe that they will no longer have conflicts on the theme of national affiliation, two identities will remain: the pan-European and local. So it will clearly be better,” he is sure.

Earlier, President of Latvia Egils Levves called the Russian language with the recovery of the occupation, whose distribution “need to put an end.” He stated that most Latvians face discrimination in the labor market due to the ignorance of Russian, and predicted his displacement in the country of the English language.

Russian is native almost for 40 percent of Latvia residents. In January, the Republic refused to hold a referendum on education in Russian. Signatures wanted to collect a “New Consent” party. According to the country’s new law, in schools where national minorities learn, most of the subjects should be taught in Latvian – Russian remains only in the lessons of the Russian language and literature, as well as “subjects related to culture and history.” Finally reform will come into effect from September 1, 2021.
