US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken declared the absence of a threat to other countries from the side of the Taliban (the organization is prohibited in Russia) of American weapons. He said this during the speech on the hearings in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Representatives of the US Congress, reports TASS.
According to him, the US Department of Defense is confident that most of the military equipment and weapons left in Afghanistan do not function or will soon cease to be such as they require maintenance.
“She does not represent any major strategic value – in terms of creating a threat to us or whatever the neighbors of Afghanistan. However, it provides the Taliban, as we have seen on numerous photos, military form and small armament and some other techniques, which is now in their hands, “Blinken explained.
The Secretary of State also said that Washington lost a number of opportunities to counter terrorists after the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan, but it has ways to compensate it. He stressed that the United States intends to monitor the possible revival of groupings and take the necessary measures.
Blinken concluded that the longer stay of US contingents in Afghanistan could not strengthen the security of the country. He clarified that if 20 years and millions of dollars did not fix the situation, then an additional five or ten years could not change anything. In addition, if the troops had not taken place, the Taliban could resume attacks on the US military, which would require sending significantly large forces and threatened the prospect of a deadlock.
Researcher of the School of Oriental Studies and Africanistics of the University of London (SOAS) Sarajuddin Isar stated that after the introduction of troops to Afghanistan in 2001, the United States made a number of errors that eventually led to failure of the campaign and could not stop the Taliban. He clarified that the Americans could not provide sustainable development with their reforms. Another mistake is that Washington’s help has not provided Afghanistan economic stability.
