American scientists stated that coronavirus is vascular, not a respiratory disease. This is reported in the material published in the Journal Circulation Research scientific journal.
According to the authors of the article, Coronavirus is primarily affecting the arterial blood system, a spike protein that forms a “crown” of the virus, damages the mitochondria of cells, which leads to the defeat of the vascular endothelium.
“We believe that the development of breathing problems in patients with COVID-19 is preceded by the development of inflammation of the vascular tissue of the pulmonary system. This explains why there are often strokes and other complications associated with circulatory impairment,” scientists from California University informed San Diego.
In the course of the study, it also found out that the S-protein affects the ACE-2 receptor, which leads to damage to the mitochondrial cells, and, as a result, the walls of the vessels. With severe forms of illness, thrombus appear in the arteries, and it is blood clots lead to death.
