Lukashenko sent finalized proposals for amendments to Constitution

The Constitutional Commission sent to the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, finalized proposals for amendments to the Constitution. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a source in the Constitutional Court of the Republic.

According to him, the head of the Constitutional Commission Peter Miklashevich promised to finalize the draft amendments and to September 1 to convey it for consideration by the head of the state. At the same time, the source did not report when an expanded meeting of the Commission on Changes to the Constitution with the participation of the President of the country will be held.

Agency’s interlocutor recalled that in July Lukashenko returned to the revision of the proposals submitted to him as amendments to the basic law. Then the Speaker of the Upper Chamber of Parliament and the head of the Constitutional Court “rid out the comments on 170 sheets.”

Earlier, Mickshevisch said that the Commission proposed to preserve the presidential form of government in the republic, to redistribute the powers between the Belarusian leader, the government and the parliament and consolidate the status of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly as a “constitutional-power” authority.

For the first time, Lukashenko declared the need to make changes to the Constitution against the background of protests, hiding in Belarus after the election of the head of the republic in 2020. To do this, in March 2021, he convened a constitutional commission from 36 people, who, he said, was to consider civil initiatives regarding the amendments to the document.
