Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov compared the relations of Russia and the United States with the period of the Cold War in conversation with the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
According to him, Moscow and Washington are currently far from the lowest point of confrontation, which was observed during the “Caribbean crisis” of 1962, when the parties were literally on the verge of a nuclear war. “The military-political situation in the world today has similarities with the period of the Cold War, and large, fundamental differences. However, it is impossible to ignore the contradictions between the main world players, which, unfortunately, continue to deepen,” he said.
Lavrov said that one of the reasons for this was the course of the United States to deterrect the development of Russia and China. In his opinion, part of this policy is a unilateral dismantling of arms control agreements, as well as increasing the power capabilities of the United States at the European and Pacific Theater of Military Action.
August 2 became aware of the US intention to expel 24 Russian diplomats from the country, who expires visa. As the head of the press service of the State Department of Ned Price, the staff of the Russian Embassy at the end of the three-year period of stay must leave the country or request extension.
In turn, the Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that at present, about 60 employees and their families expect a decision on visa requests submitted to the State Department, some more than a year since May 2020.
