A negative effect of alcohol consumption is found in youth

Researchers from Great Britain found out that alcohol consumption in adolescent and youthful age is associated with increased tightening of arteries – precursor of cardiovascular diseases. Scientists presented their findings at the Curdiology Congress.

The tightening of the arteries occurring with age is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In this case, this negative effect can accelerate and harmful habits – so, it was shown that adolescents had smoking.

Researchers from the University College of London analyzed data on alcohol and tobacco consumption of 1655 participants of the Longitudinal studies aged 17 to 24 years. The rigidity of the arteries from the participants was assessed at the age of 17 and in 24 years, measuring how much time from the arterial pulse occupies to reach a sleepy to the femoral artery. On average, for the measured period, it rose by 10.3 percent. At the same time, the more young people consumed alcohol, the harder they had an arteries later. There was no such dependency for tobacco use.
