Necessary dose of vitamin C

Researchers with the help of new methods of analysis revised the results of the study, based on the results of which WHO installed the daily consumption standards of vitamin C. Dosage detected by specialists more than twice the established organization. Article of scientists has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In 1944, commissioned by the British Ministry of Health under the leadership of the future laureate of the Nobel Prize Hans Krebsh in Sheffield held a clinical study, the purpose of which was to figure out the minimum diet for lifeboats. During the experiment, the tests for nine months ate only that food, which is available in boats, and also took vitamin C.

The minimum necessary dosage scientists were installed on the power of scars from the Russian Academy of Sciences – their poor healing is the symptom of zing. The dosage of ten milligrams per day was necessary to determine the disease. WHO’s value for vitamin C – 45 milligrams per day – was installed, relying on the results of the study.

Scientists from the University of Washington decided with the help of modern statistical methods to check the conclusions of Krebs, made according to scientists, “on the eye”. Their analysis of data shows that to prevent weak healing of wounds, a daily dose of 95 milligres of vitamin C is needed – which is twice as many WHO standards. Also, experts found out that recovery from vitamin deficit takes longer than it was thought and requires large dosages – even 90 milligrams will not be enough.
