Seven obstacles to “Nord Stream-2”

The German edition of Handelsblatt has identified seven key obstacles for the gas pipeline “Nord Stream-2”.

First, the most serious obstacle – the EU Gas Directive, which the tightened two years ago specifically to complicate the implementation of the project. The European Commission can not approve the project as required to EU interests, or to refuse to “Gazprom” the right to be its operator.

The second, third and fourth barriers related to intra-European politics: the position of Poland and the Baltic states, who do not want to strengthen Russia, wary of the project in the European Parliament and the German Party “Green”, which has consistently opposed it

.

The fifth obstacle author Handelsblatt called Amos Hohshteyna, US diplomat responsible for energy security. He is known as an opponent of the Russian gas pipeline, and his appointment means that the US is ready to continue to affect the situation.

The sixth and seventh reason directly related to environmental policy: we are talking about claims of environmental organizations in Germany against the construction of the pipeline and that the project is contrary to EU climate policy – 30 years, Europeans want to abandon fossil fuels. However, states that “North Stream 2” can be altered, instead of natural gas for transportation of hydrogen.

Earlier, the chairman of the party “Alternative for Germany” Joerg Wash told about the consequences of the country’s rejection of the pipeline “Nord Stream-2”. He felt that this would be the end of Germany as an industrial power. The reason for failure of the pipeline may be coming to power of a new government led by the “Greens,” said Wash. According to him, such a government can be “ideologically blind so that will cut this vital artery for Germany”.
