During the week, President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, will present a draft change in the country’s constitution. This was stated by Chairman of the Constitutional Court (CS) of the Republic of Peter Miklashevichev, writes BelTA.
he noted that the Constitutional Commission examined in detail all comments to the draft amendments and finalized the final proposals. Miclashevich stressed that 14 new articles were introduced into the new version of the document, two, as well as 53 of the Constitution Articles were changed.
According to him, the Commission proposed to preserve the presidential form of government in the republic, redistribute the authority between the Belarusian leader, the government and the parliament and consolidate the status of the Allbalustal People’s Assembly as a “constitutional-authority” authority. The head of the COP also mentioned that in the new constitution proposed “to strengthen social guarantees of large families, people with disabilities, pensioners” and introduce the position of the Commissioner for Human Rights.
Earlier it became known that Lukashenko remained unhappy with the previous editorial office of the constitutional project and gave it to refinement to the Constitutional Commission. He did not explain what exactly caused discontent, but at the same time promised to “sit down and walk” for each article of the document before rendering him to a national discussion.
For the first time, the Belarusian president declared the need to make changes to the Constitution against the background of protests, riding in Belarus after the election of the head of the republic in 2020. To do this, in March 2021, he convened a constitutional commission from 36 people, who, he said, was to consider civil initiatives regarding the amendments to the document.
