Activists insist that American color communities should get equal access to electrocarbers compared to the white population. Now they not only can not afford the purchase of an electric vehicle, but also do not have the necessary infrastructure in areas of residence for comfortable use of such transport, reports NBC News.
In August, US President Joe Biden signed a decree on reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. Among other measures, the authorities want to accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles.
However, not all Americans are in equal terms for using eco-friendly cars. The study of the University of Humboldt revealed that the chargers for electric vehicles are less available for dark-skinned and latino. Analysts indicated that most stations for recharging are “in richer and white” areas. For example, in Chicago, as of 2020, such objects for the maintenance of electrocarbers were mainly in North-Side, where white secured population lives. At the same time, in South Side and the West Side, where representatives of national minorities live, there were no stations.
In addition, the report of researchers from the University of California showed that among buyers of new and used electric vehicles only 12 percent of black or latinos. Along with this, their share accounts for 41 percent of the purchases of cars with an internal combustion engine, which are still popular among this group of buyers.
Human rights activists require electric vehicles to be also available for color communities, as for the white population. This will contribute to this fair distribution of charging stations in all districts and the provision of financial support to black and Latin Americans. Support is to introduce discounts and increasing tax benefits so that the purchase of vehicles is not so burdensome for less secured population groups.
The US government plans to achieve carbon neutrality in collaboration with the automotive industry. The authorities set a goal that by 2030 50 percent of all new cars sold in the United States were electric. In addition, the administration of Byjden encourages automakers to reduce emissions of exhaust gases and increase fuel consumption for new cars.
