The UN was conquered by news of violence used by Latvia regarding illegal migrants. This was stated by the representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the Nordic and Baltic region Elizabeth Haslund, writes LSM.lv portal.
She also drew attention to reports that Latvian border guards deliberately displacing illegal themselves back across the border with Belorussia. “UNHCR is concerned that the measures taken can completely exclude for persons who need protection, the ability to seek asylum in the regions where a state of emergency is valid,” Haslund said.
The UN Representative called on Latvia to refrain from violence and stressed that the opportunity to seek refuge is the fundamental human right.
On August 11, the Latvian authorities announced the introduction of an emergency regime (emergency) in the areas bordering Belarus due to the influx of illegal migrants. The appropriate decree obliges the army and the police to assist border guards in the capture of illegal immigrants and the protection of the country of the country from the experts from the outside.
