Researchers from the United States found that the koronavirus born during a pandemic of children significantly decreased IQ (intelligence coefficient). Scientists presented their findings in preprint on medrxiv.org.
The first few years of the child’s life are extremely strongly influenced by the process of its cognitive development. Coronavirus pandemic significantly complicated him – many kindergartens and playgrounds were closed, because of the restrictions most children were at home.
Scientists conducted testing on IQ for 672 children by age from three months to three years, born in the state of Rhode Island. 308 of them were born until January 2019, 176 – from January 2019 to March 2020, and 188 – after July 2020. None of them was born prematurely and did not have deviations in development. The average test of the IQ on the Mallen scale for early development in those who were born during a pandemic amounted to 78 – at a time for those who were born to her (from 2011 to 2019), he was 100. Most of all worsened indicators for those born in low-income families.
It is not known whether the results will be shown to have long-term consequences. However, the fact that the study was conducted in a relatively prosperous staff with a developed system of social security, inspires concern, emphasize scientists.
