UN has declared situation in Afghanistan a humanitarian catastrophe

A representative of the World Food Program (WFP) Thomson Peiri called the situation in Afghanistan a humanitarian catastrophe. The state of affairs in the country has become the topic of discussion at the UN Briefing, which took place on Friday, August 13. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“We fear that the worst is only ahead and the biggest wave of hunger quickly approaches. It is no secret that the situation has worsened and becomes more unpredictable. The situation has all the signs of a humanitarian catastrophe,” Piri said.

According to the representative of the WFP, as of August 2021, every third Afghanist does not know what it will eat tomorrow. About two million children need additional calories. By December 2021, assistance may need nine million people. For this reason, Pyiri asks donors to increase the organization’s financing for 200 million dollars.

Civil War in Afghanistan lasts since 1979. The state is included in the list of poorest countries. The budget of Afghanistan largely depends on the financial injections of third countries.

After the announcement of the withdrawal of American troops, the terrorist group “Taliban” (prohibited in Russia) began a rapid offensive in the position of the Afghan army. The position of the government of Afghanistan is becoming more critical every day. Over the past week, the Taliban was able to capture the capital of 16 provinces. On August 12, two most important cities fell: the second in size in the country of Kandahar and the following herata.
