Belarus: confirmed detention of ambassador who supported protest

Member of the Presidium of the Coordination Council of the Belarusian Opposition and the former Minister of Culture Pavel Latushko confirmed the detention at the homeland of the former ambassador of the country in Slovakia Igor Beshech. The corresponding statement policy appeared in its Telegram channel on Thursday, August 12.

Latushko reminded that before Besheshiya, while still the ambassador, supported the protests who swept Belorussia after the announcement of the results of the presidential elections in August 2020. “I remember when he publicly made a statement against violence, it all inspired us that the colleague, ambassador, the diplomat expressed his position,” said politics.

He stressed that now there are very many diplomats against the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, they suffer: they are deprived of diplomatic status, they dismiss, delay and arrest. In addition, Latushko appealed to the current employees of Belarusian dipservables with a call to find the strength to organize resistance to the current regime and support the people.

As noted by RIA Novosti, the law enforcement agencies of Belarus have not yet commented on the information on the detention of the ex-ambassador. At the same time, it became known that the surname of the former diplomat appears in the lists with data on those in the center of insulation of offenders in Minsk, which are preparing Belarusian volunteers.

On August 11, the Human Rights Center “Spring” reported that the security forces came with a search in the apartment of a bush. It was noted that, according to unconfirmed data, after searches, the ex-ambassador was detained. At the same time, the criminal case was not reported on the initiation against him.

Igor Leshin was held by the post of Belarus in Slovakia since 2016. After the end of the presidential election and the beginning of mass protests, he publicly stuck behind the demonstrators and demanded from Lukashenko to leave the post. “Like all Belarusians, I’m shocked by stories about torture and beating of my country’s citizens,” the diplomat said. Later he filed a resignation. Lukashenko satisfied him and deprived the ambassador of diplomatic regalia.
