The members of the Constitutional Commission of Belarus decided to exclude the wording about the desire to build a neutral state from the text of the Constitution. This was announced by one of the members of the Commission Alexander Shpakovsky in his Telegram Channel.
We are talking about Article 18 of the Basic Law of the Republic, which states that Belarus comes from the principles of non-use of the force and peaceful settlement of disputes and excludes military aggression against foreign countries. According to Shpakovsky, all 36 members of the Commission unanimously supported a proposal for amending this provision.
He noted that the rejection of the non-use of military force in foreign policy is of great importance for ensuring the national security and stability of Belarus in the context of escalation of tensions in relations with Western countries. Care from neutrality, Shatpakovsky is confident, will provide the country with the opportunity to respond to global and regional challenges.
For the first time, Lukashenko declared the need to make changes to the Constitution against the background of protests that engulfed Belarus after the presidential election on August 9, 2020. In March, he convened a special constitutional commission from 36 people and stated that it would deal with civil initiatives to a new project.
Belarusian leader noted that the changes will affect and prescribed in the Constitution of the principles of foreign policy activities of the republic. In particular, he pointed out the refusal to build a neutral state, since “it is impossible to remain neutral today.”
later it became known that the referendum may raise the question of limiting the term of presidential powers, tightening age qualifications and settling casses.
