Lithuania: promised to persuade Beijing to return Chinese ambassador to Vilnius

Landsbergis Lithuanian Minister Landsbergis announced readiness to take all necessary measures to return the Chinese ambassador, on the eve of Beijing. His words reports LRT.LT.

Landsbergis noted that the employees of the foreign policy permissions have already taken certain steps to persuade China to change their decision. The Minister is confident that there was no misunderstanding between the countries, which can be solved on diplomatic channels.

“This, of course, is not a break of diplomatic relations, but still very annoying and even unacceptable,” Landsbergis stressed, promising to correct the situation. He also drew attention to the fact that Taiwan has offices in other countries, and the Chinese ambassadors from there responded.

August 10, China expressed a protest due to the decision of Lithuania to open a diplomatic representative office of Taiwan in the country. In response, Beijing recalled its ambassador from Vilnius, and also appealed to the Lithuanian side with a request to withdraw its ambassador from the PRC.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said that they took note of this decision, and regret the like step of China.

Earlier, Taiwan Joseph Foreign Minister informed about the plans to open office of the island in the capital of Lithuania. According to the Lithuanian Minister of Economics and Innovations, Aushrina Armonaite, this will happen in the fall of 2021.

Taiwan came out of the control of Beijing in 1949, when after losing in the civil war, representatives of the Chinese party of the Khomintan were moved there. Nevertheless, China’s power continues to consider the island part of the PRC.
