The Ministry of Mining Industry and Energy of Brazil on Monday, August 9, presented a new program aimed at supporting the coal sector, writes Bloomberg.
Thus, Brazil openly enters the conflict with the UN, because on the same day the organization has previously issued a report on the irreversibility of global warming with a call to stop using fossil fuels. According to the UN Secretary General Anthony Guterry, the report should be “funeral” for the coal sector.
Brazil plans to maintain the coal sector in the southern states of the country until 2050. In these regions, the mines remain the main place of work of local residents, and thermal power plants – the main source of energy. The report of the Ministry states that a sharp reduction in coal use will create negative social and economic consequences.
Officials want to bring $ 3.9 billion in the coal industry for investment over the next 10 years, and with their help, including modernize power plants and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, Brazil plans to achieve full decarbonization of its energy sector by 2050.
Brazil is not an active consumer of coal. She burns for a year as much as China for three days. Nevertheless, Brazil’s coal program contradicts the policies of the other largest economies in the world. In addition, the country wants to double oil production by 2030 to become the fifth largest exporter in the world.
