Lithuania answered China’s decision to withdraw its ambassador from Vilnius to consult. It is reported by the press service of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
The department noted that they regret the similar step of China. They also stressed that they took note of the Chinese side to withdraw the Ambassador of Lithuania from Beijing.
At the same time, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry announced the intention of developing “mutually beneficial relations with Taiwan, as many other countries of the European Union (EU) and the rest of the world do.
August 10, China expressed a protest due to the decision of Lithuania to open a diplomatic representative office of Taiwan in the country. In response, Beijing recalled its ambassador from Vilnius, and also appealed to the Lithuanian side with a request to withdraw its ambassador from the PRC.
Earlier, Taiwan Joseph Foreign Minister informed about the plans to open office of the island in the capital of Lithuania. According to the Lithuanian Minister of Economics and Innovations, Aushrina Armonaite, this will happen in the fall of 2021.
Taiwan came out of the control of Beijing in 1949, when after losing in the civil war, representatives of the Chinese party of the Khomintan were moved there. Nevertheless, China’s authorities continue to count the island part of the PRC.
