Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated failure of US Initiatives to Combat Drugs in Afghanistan

The output of the American military contingent from Afghanistan confirms the failure of the US Initiatives to Combat Drugs in this country. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Department of New Challenges and Threats (DNV) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Vladimir Tarabrin in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The diplomat indicated that about 84 percent of the world production of opiates falls on Afghanistan. According to him, the volume of methamphetamine production has also increased in the country.

“It is noteworthy that the achievement of peak indicators in the Afghan drug industry coincided with the presence of Americans and their NATO allies in this country,” said Tarabrin. He stated that the volume of illicit drug production in the republic increased ten times after the invasion of US troops into Afghan territories. The head of the DNV added that in Afghanistan, today there is a debt diagram of the drug business, which does not depend on the presence or absence of foreign troops there.

Against the background of the withdrawal of US troops and NATO countries from Afghanistan, the situation in the country has become particularly tense. In the republic, the forces of the Radical Movement “Taliban” were activated (prohibited in Russia). Afghan President Ashraf Ghani accused the American side in a too sudden decision on the conclusion of the army from the country. In his opinion, this step of Washington led to the current military exacerbation.
