Lithuania will ask EU countries to shelter illegal immigrants from Belarus

Lithuania may contact the countries of the European Union (EU) with a request to accommodate illegal migrants who arrived from the territory of Belarus. This was reported by Prime Minister of the Republic of Ingrid Shimonite after meeting with the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilva Johansson, writes Delfi.

Premier noted that the government will ask the EU to shelter illegal immigrants while Lithuania will deal with their applications for refugee status. According to her, so will come if the situation with the influx of migrants will be released from under control.

Johansson, in turn, supported the Lithuanian side and stated that the EU should block illegal access to the Schengen space. “Now the main thing is to stop the illegal penetration into Lithuania and send these people back,” she emphasized.

Earlier, in the State Border Protection Service, Lithuanian reported on a new record in the number of caught illegal immigrants from Belarus. The department reported that on August 1, border guards detained 289 such migrants. Most of them introduced themselves as citizens of Iraq.

In July, the European Union agreed to allocate Lithuania 10 million euros (more than 866 million rubles) to combat the migration crisis and its consequences. Part of the financing will go to the content of illegal immigrants in tent camps and migration centers.
