Scientists from the Swedish University of Umea revealed that in the first two weeks after COVID-19, the risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke significantly increases. The new mortal danger of the transferred coronavirus infection is reported in the article published in the Lancet magazine.
86,742 patients with COVID-19 and 348 481 healthy person from the control group took part in a major study. At the same time, each case, a group of four people corresponding to the age, sex and country of residence was contrasted with coronavirus.
Specialists compared the frequency of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with COVID-19 with a frequency of violations of the cardiovascular system in people from the control group from February 1 to September 14, 2020. From the analysis, persons were excluded that had already suffered a heart attack and stroke (it is known that the risk of re-infarction and stroke in such people increases).
It turned out that COVID-19 increased the risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke in the first two weeks after the disease three times. This dependence remained even taking into account factors such as related diseases, age, gender and socio-economic factors. Thus, acute cardiovascular complications are an important clinical manifestation of COVID-19 and emphasize the importance of vaccination as a measure of prevention.
