Scientists under the guidance of Professor Zhejiang University Andre Python developed a system that on open data on the Internet will be able to predict the terrorist attack a week before its planned commit. Results are published in Science Advances Scientific Journal.
“Several thousand people die every year. Using only socially available data, we have created a model that can predict many terrorist attacks a week before they are committed in those regions of the world, where terrorists are particularly active,” the scientists noted.
To check its theory, experts analyzed a huge array of information, which included data on terrorist attacks throughout the world from 2003 to 2016. They tried to find indicators that would allow to predict the attacks.
It turned out that in those regions where terrorist acts often occur, it is possible to predict about half of these incidents in advance. Researchers noted that their development may be able to help the profile special services to prevent accidents and allow spending less means for false messages.
Earlier, Russian scientists from the Northeast Federal University and the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University found that Memantine – the drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease – can be effective in the fight against the spincerebellar ataxia of the 1st type (SCA1), a deadly hazardous neurodegenerative disease, which is affected by the cerebellum.
