EU will consider introduction of sanctions against Belarus due to illegal migrants

The European Union (EU) will consider the possibility of imposing sanctions against those engaged in the importation of illegal migrants from Belarus to the territory of the association. This was announced by the head of the foreign policy department of the EU Josep Borrel in a statement published on the website of the Council of the European Union.

Borrel stressed that the EU condemns the “Belarusian regime” for the use of refugees and migrants as a tool to achieve political goals. “The EU and his Member States will fight the continuing burst of illegal intersections of the EU border from Belarus to preserve the integrity of their external border,” he said.

The diplomat recalled that the countries of the European Union had already sent additional funds and staff to the border of Lithuania and Belarus. In particular, employees of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) went to the problem zone. Borrel noted that the EU will continue to strengthen its external border and refuse migrants who have no legal grounds to be located on the territory of the association.

On July 2, Lithuanian authorities introduced an emergency mode due to the influx of illegal immigrants from the Middle East, which fall into the country from the territory of Belarus. The authorities are accused of the happening Minsk and personally president of Alexander Lukashenko. At the end of July it was reported that Lithuanian border guards detained in July 100 times more illegal migrants from Belarus than in January.
