German trains plan to fully translate to renewable energy sources. Harmful emissions from the railway transport system of Germany will be minimized by 2038, writes Deutsche Welle edition (DW).
The main National Railway Operator in Germany – Concern Deutsche Bahn (DB) – intends to switch all locomotives for electricity from renewable sources in the next 17 years from the country, including from the Sun, Wind, Biomass and Water. DB has already entered into contracts for the supply of electricity from the solar power plant from Enerparc in Earth Mecklenburg for the next 30 years. In 2021, spending on the “clean” energy will amount to over 60 percent of the consumption of the concern.
The cumulative annual energy consumption of the concern’s train is 10 terravatt-hours, which is approximately equal to the power consumption of all Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany.
Several years ago, German ICE expressions and IC / EC trains have already transferred to environmentally friendly electricity, the locomotives on pure fuel are marked with green stripes instead of traditional red.
Ecology of the railway in Germany is supported by the introduction of trains that go to the “clean” energy of hydrogen. The expressions of the Coradia ILINT of the French company Alstom are cruising in German lands since 2016, the total length of transportation in Europe by 2021 amounted to 110 thousand miles (177 thousand kilometers). While hydrogen engines are present only in newly released locomotives, but manufacturers intend to make a similar modernization of old rolling stock.
