Chinese scientists broke the record, reaching the plasma temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds and 160 million degrees Celsius for 20 seconds. According to the researchers, this is the most important step towards reproducing thermonuclear synthesis, which naturally proceeds in the sun and other stars. This is reported by the publication of Global Times.
Record managed to beat East to Tokamak (Experimental Advanced SuperConducting Tokamak), located in the Hefeji Institute of Physical Sciences. Previously, scientists working in EAST project managed to achieve a temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius for a hundred seconds. At the same time, the reaches of the plasma temperature above 100 million degrees is one of the key tasks when using nuclear synthesis. It is believed that the temperature in the Sun kernel is 15 million degrees, and this means that the plasma in the tokamak is several times hotter than the sun.
According to scientists, the development of the systems of thermonuclear synthesis will leave for another 30 years before technology can be applied in practice.
EAST experiment is part of the project to create an international thermalide experimental reactor (ITER), in which China, India, EU, Russia, USA and other countries participate.
