China wants to turn its main winery of Ninxia in a competitor to French Bordeaux, sweating the country in this market, writes CNBC.
By 2035, 600 million bottles worth 20 billion yuan should be produced in this region (3.12 billion dollars). “If this goal is achieved, Ninxia will become important and influential worldwide producer comparable to Bordeaux,” said the director of international cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture of China Sui Penfei.
Ninxia is only one of the several wine-making areas of China. Last year, Bordeaux produced 522 million bottles of 3.5 billion euros (4.16 billion dollars).
Last year, the export of wine from Ninxia grew by 46.4 percent, up to 2.65 million yuan (about 414 thousand dollars). Major buyers – USA, European Union, Australia and Japan. In general, China ranks sixth in the world in the consumption of wine and the tenth in liters.
Earlier it was reported that the production of wine in France was threatened due to cold weather in Europe. Damage caused due to frost can reduce production by a third, and losses are estimated at 1.5-2 billion euros (2.4 billion dollars).
