Audacity’s audio editor users otted Attention For the publication Privacy Notifications governing issues related to telemetry sending and handling accumulated information about users. Disabilities Call two items:
- in the data list that can be obtained during the collecting process of telemetry, in addition to parameters such as the Hash IP address, the version of the operating system and the CPU model, there is a mention of the information necessary for law enforcement agencies, legal proceedings and requests from authorities. The problem is that the wording is too general and the nature of the specified data is not detailed, i.e. Formally, the developers reserve the right to transfer any data from the user system in the event of an admission of the relevant request. With regard to the processing of telemetry data for their own purposes, it is stated that the data will be stored in the European Union, but transmitted to processing to offices located in Russia and the United States.
- The rules state that the application is not intended for individuals, under 13 years old. This item can be interpreted as an age discrimination, which violates the GPLv2 license conditions, under which comes with Audacity code.
Recall that in May the sound editor Audacity was sold to Muse Group, which expressed their willingness to provide resources to upgrade the interface and the implementation of the non-structured regime editing, retaining the product in the form of a free project. Initially, the Audacity program was designed only to work on the local system, without contacting external services over the network, but the Muse Group plans include inclusion in Audacity to integrate with cloud services, check availability, sending Telemetry and reports with information about failures and errors.
