The European Commission intends to introduce tax on aviation fuel for flights within the EU. Reports about it Reuters with reference to the appropriate draft document.
In particular, the European Commission wants to introduce a minimum rate from 2023, which will initially be zero percent. Over the next 10 years, it will gradually increase until it reaches the maximum level. What exactly will be the tax for airlines, not specifying.
In the event of the approval of the bill, the tax will be distributed only on regular passenger flights and will not affect freight transportation and business aviation.
Such a decision is connected with the desire to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. At the same time, during the first 10 years, the new tax will not spread to hydrogen or modern biofuels. According to the European Commission, it should stimulate the airline to switch to more eco-friendly fuels.
Earlier it was reported that the Member States “Big Seven” decided to abandon the use of coal as fuel. Thus, they are going to bring their policies in line with the tasks of the Paris Agreement on Climate from 2015.
