Council of Europe’s rabbis saw duality in Latvian policy on Holocaust

The Council of the Rabbi of Europe (Cre) saw duality in the politics of the Latvian authorities regarding the memory of the Holocaust. This was stated by President of Cre, the main rabbi of Moscow Pinhas Goldsmidt, his words reported RIA Novosti.

“Latvia’s authorities still combine the memory of the Holocaust with the heroization of Latvian collaborators and the honors of the SS veterans at the annual parades,” Goldshmidt said. He concluded that the leaders of some countries are trying to rewrite history.

At the same time, the head of Cre stressed that the Jewish community in Latvia lives in good terms and develops thanks to the government’s support. He said that three years ago members of the Council expressed gratitude to the authorities of the country at a meeting with Latvian leader Raimonds Weisonis. According to Goldshmidt, Riga has taken many efforts to return to the Jews of the previously seized property and ensure their safety.

During World War II, about 90 percent of the Jewish population of Latvia became victims of the Holocaust. In the country occupied by the Germans, many concentration camps were also located.

June 21 it became known that for the first time in 100 years they hired rabbi, which became a symbol of the revival of Jewish life after decades after the Holocaust. Priests and pastors are already religious services about 94 thousand Christians in the German army, however, for the Jews, which are about 300 people, they were not available.
