China: tutoring was equated to prostitution and gambling

The authorities of Siangyan and Huangan cities in the Central Chinese province of Hubei instructed the law enforcement agencies responsible for fighting pornography and illegal publications, prevent illegal tutoring. It is reported by the newspaper South China Morning Post.

The Government of China began a campaign to terminate paid out-of-school tutoring services. The measure was adopted due to the enormous educational expenses of Chinese families. The authorities hope that by reducing spending on education, the Chinese will start to start more children. This should be part of the fertility policy, as the authorities expect that due to its fall, the number of able-bodied citizens will decrease.

Local administrations are already executed by Beijing’s decision to ban private lessons, having equated them to small crimes. However, some residents of the country surveyed by the newspaper are still going to hiring tutors in secret, even if their services will cost ten times more expensive. High competition in the entrance examinations in high school and college forces families to pay for additional classes. “If others are hired private tutors, we will probably make the same thing,” said a resident of the Western city Chengdu.

Chinese media already covers the emergence of the black market of educational services. In the city of Huangshan, the police arrested employees of the tutoring center. The local press reported on the raid as well as describes the persecution of prostitution and underground casinos, which in China is out of law.

Private educational institutions suffer most of all from the new law, because they formally work with tutoring. At the same time, the teachers themselves believe that the new ban will not kill their career. “While there are entrance exams in college, [tutors] can always earn money,” said teachers.

Previously, the authorities of China offered companies working in the field of additional school education, to become non-commercial organizations. This is only part of measures that can defeat a 100 billion high-tech education industry in the country. According to transformations, companies will no longer enable capital and go to the stock exchange.
