Japan Defense Minister Nobuo Kisi was worried about the actions of the Russian military on the Kuril Islands, in particular on the island of Kunashir. This was announced by the Japanese branch of the British news agency Reuters.
“Russia continues military activity in the Far Eastern Region,” Kisi emphasized.
The words of the head of the military department sounded during a visit to the Titose military base on Hokkaido Island – the Minister arrived there with a check. In a speech, he also drew attention to rocket plants in Russia on Kunashir, radar aircraft and fighters over Japanese and Okhotsk seas.
Earlier in June, the Government of Japan expressed a protest of Russia due to military exercises of parts of the Army Corps of the Eastern Military District and the Forces of the Pacific Fleet on the southern part of the Kuril Islands.
Wednesday on the website of the Ministry of Defense of Russia reported on the beginning of large-scale exercises in the Kuril Islands and in the water area of the Japanese Sea. More than 10 thousand servicemen are involved in combat training events, 500 units of military equipment, 32 aircraft, 12 ships and ships.
Following the results of the Second World War between Moscow and Tokyo, a peace treaty was not concluded. The main obstacle for its signing was the unresolved territorial dispute around the southern part of Kuril – Islands ITUURUP, Kunashir, Shikotan and group of Habmioma Islands. Japan calls them “Northern Territories” and does not recognize Russian sovereignty over them. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute itself.
