Over the past week in Latvia, the number of infesses Indian strain COVID-19 “Delta” has significantly increased. This was told by the head of the National Reference Laboratory Sergey Nikishin, writes TVnet.
According to him, in a week, this strain of coronavirus was discovered in 45 patients or 15 percent of new cases. Nikishin noted that the cause of 80 percent of infections was the British strain “Alpha”. In addition, last week revealed four cases of the Egyptian strain of COVID-19 and two cases of the Brazilian strain “Gamma”.
Nikishin stressed that the “Delta” strain attacked by Latvia is 60% more infected than British. In his opinion, by the end of August, the Indian strain will cause 90 percent of all infection with coronavirus in Latvia.
According to scientists, Delta strain turned out to be less dangerous in terms of risk of hospitalization and death, despite higher infinity. It was noted that he mainly strikes young people who have a strong immunity. At the same time, the Elderly Indian strain affects to a lesser extent.
