Two citizens of Belarus illegally crossed the Lithuanian border and turned to local authorities asking asylum. This is on Tuesday, June 29, reports TUT.BY Telegram-channel with reference to the Lithuanian border service.
The incident happened on the eve. In total, the border guards of Lithuania detained 13 illegal migrants. Eleven of them introduced themselves as citizens of Iraq, but did not have documents.
At the end of May, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, threatened to weaken the control over drug trafficking and illegal migration due to the reaction of the West to the incident with the Ryanair aircraft. “We stopped drugs and migrants, now you will have themselves and catch them,” he promised.
According to the latest data, from the beginning of 2021, 600 illegal migrants were detained at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, which is almost eight times more than the entire 2020th. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Lithuania Agne Tilty accused Lukashenko in earnings on the transformation of migrants to the borders of the Baltic Republic.
