Heads of states and governments of the European Union at the Summit in Brussels rejected the idea of the German chancellor Angels Merkel and the France leader Emmanuel Macgron to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet the leaders of the EU countries. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to TASS, the summit will consider the initiatives of the EU states to build further relations with Russia.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the initiative to invite Putin to the summit with the leaders of the European Union was probably related to the meeting of the Russian and American leaders in Geneva. Lavrov noted that, apparently, the Geneva negotiations were perceived in Brussels as a signal to the fact that “now you can also show your independence a little.”
June 23 Financial Times reported that Germany and France called on the EU to more dense interaction with Russia. In particular, some diplomats and the German Chancellor herself Angela Merkel offered to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the summit with the leaders of the European Union. The idea was supported by French President Emmanuel Makron.
