Germany finished with production of uranium

Germany completely stopped the production of uranium. The authorities ended up with a 30-year program on folding the mining of radioactive substance on June 1, reports Deutsche Welle.

The last batch of the mixture of water and uranium oxide in two silos weighing 19.5 tons left the territory of the Wismut plant in Königstein. Since 1997, the uranium mixture has been purchased from 1997, which is engaged in the production of nuclear fuel.

The coating of uranium production in Germany occurred under the control of the European Community on Atomic Energy (EURATOM) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The last 30 years in Germany led to the processing of reserves at which about 3.35 thousand tons of substance managed to get.

Germany (GDR) until 1990 held the fourth place in the world for the production of uranium. Since 1946, only for the USSR nuclear program, about 216.3 tons of radioactive substance were delivered to the Soviet Union. Since 1991, WISMUT has restored the damage caused to its activities. Environmental programs for these goals cost the government of 6.8 billion euros.

Activities for the production of enriched uranium throughout the world controls the IAEA. In March 2021, representatives of the department conducted an inspection on the fact of obtaining the radioactive substance in the North Korea, which is used in the nuclear industry. In August 2020, Iran agreed to provide IAEA observers access to closed, but causing suspicions to nuclear facilities.
